Erection Problems in Your 30s

It feels like something that happens to older men. It happens to plenty of younger ones, and the reasons are usually not the ones they fear.

A man in his thirties with erection trouble tends to assume two things: that it is unusual, and that it means something is seriously wrong with him. The first is not true. The second is worth checking properly, because in younger men the causes tend to be different and a good share of them respond well to attention.

How common it actually is

Surveys consistently find a meaningful minority of men under forty report erectile difficulty at least some of the time. Occasional trouble is close to universal — almost every man has had a night that did not work, and one night is not a condition.

What matters is pattern. Something that happens sometimes, usually when you are exhausted or have had too much to drink, is normal. Something consistent across weeks, regardless of circumstance, is worth looking into.

Where the causes differ from an older man's

Anxiety carries more of the weight. In younger men, psychological causes make up a much larger share. That does not make the problem imaginary — anxiety triggers the fight-or-flight system, and that system narrows the exact arteries an erection needs open. The mechanism is entirely physical even when the trigger is not.

Blood vessel disease is less likely but more significant. Serious vascular disease is uncommon at thirty-five, which is precisely why it matters when it shows up. Erection problems in a young man can be an early flag for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or undiagnosed diabetes, and finding any of those at thirty-five is a far better outcome than finding them at fifty-five.

Medication and substances feature heavily. Antidepressants are extremely common in this age group and frequently affect sexual function. So do heavy cannabis use, anabolic steroids — which shut down natural testosterone production, sometimes for a long time — and nicotine in any form.

Sleep debt is routine and rarely suspected. Testosterone is largely produced during sleep, and a stretch of five-hour nights measurably lowers it. Younger men are the most likely to be running that deficit and the least likely to connect it.

The loop that turns one night into a pattern

Something goes wrong once, usually for a boring reason. The next occasion arrives with a question attached, and part of your attention goes to monitoring rather than participating. Monitoring is threat-system activity, threat-system activity constricts arteries, and the result is worse than it needed to be — which confirms the worry.

Three or four repetitions in, the original cause is irrelevant. You are now responding to your own track record. This is why so many younger men describe a problem that started with a single bad night and never quite went away.

The one self-check worth doing

Pay attention to morning erections. If you still wake up with them regularly but struggle during sex, that suggests the blood vessels and nerves are working, which points toward anxiety, tiredness or medication rather than a vascular problem. If they have clearly declined too, that shifts the picture and makes a doctor's appointment more useful.

Worth getting checked even at 35

Blood pressure, fasting glucose or HbA1c, and a lipid panel. If your sex drive has dropped alongside your erections, add a morning testosterone test. It is one appointment and a blood draw, and it either finds something worth knowing early or rules it out.

What tends to help

Fix the sleep first — it is free, it works within weeks, and it is the most commonly overlooked factor at this age. Cut evening alcohol, which wrecks sleep quality even when it helps you fall asleep. If you started an antidepressant recently and the timing lines up, take that to the prescriber rather than stopping it yourself; there are usually alternatives.

For the anxiety half, the most effective move is taking the outcome off the table for a while. No test means nothing to fail, and the monitoring loses its purpose. Talking to a partner about it helps more than most men expect, largely because what they imagine their partner is thinking is almost always harsher than the reality.

Where medication fits at this age

It works on the blood vessel step, so it helps whether the root cause is physical or psychological. For an anxiety-driven pattern that is genuinely useful: a run of reliable nights removes the evidence the worry was feeding on, and the loop often unwinds by itself.

A medicine like sildenafil is not a commitment to taking something forever. Plenty of younger men use treatment for a period while sorting out sleep, drinking or a medication change, and find they reach for it less. What it does not do is answer why this started — and at thirty-five, that question is the one worth asking.

Questions people ask

Occasional difficulty is close to universal at any age. A consistent pattern across weeks is less common but far from rare, and it is worth investigating rather than ignoring.

Usually not, but it is worth checking. Vascular disease is less likely at this age, which is exactly why finding it early would matter. Blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol cover most of it.

This is debated and the evidence is not settled. What is better established is that anxiety, sleep debt, alcohol and medication affect erections, and those are more productive places to start.

That is for a doctor to judge from your health and history. Many younger men use it for a period while addressing the underlying cause, rather than as a permanent arrangement.
